K.I.S.S.(clockworks) is a new site-specific sculpture in the K.I.S.S. (Kinetic Independent Solar System) series of kinetic light sculptures powered by collected and stored solar energy. The energy generated by the solar technology in previous sculptures in the series exceeds the energy required to operate their several motors and lights, leaving a surplus of renewable energy “wasted”. This new K.I.S.S.(clockworks) commission hosts USB and 110-volt outlets to serve as an open-to-the-public energy source for the venue's day-to-day operations and is shared with visitors. The kinetic design of K.I.S.S.(clockworks) will use a single motor with a variety of timing belts and pulleys. Like clockwork, the episodic design will incorporate numbers, colors, shapes, arms, and lights to reveal its mechanism, kinetic design, and solar-energy components as a transparent web of carefully arranged, perfectly timed, and precisely jerry-rigged machine. As both autonomous kinetic sculptures and a portable power hub, this collaboration with times for this new commission collapses the distinction between an art object and the institutional infrastructure that houses it, merging them in their efforts toward sustainability.
Materials and parts include solar panels, lithium batteries, solar controller, solar inverter, motor, plywood, bamboo, wood, metal, acrylic paint, pigments, light gels, electrical wire, lightbulbs, and hardware.Dimension are 103 inches tall, 48 inches wide and 17 inches deep.
Deville Cohen is an artist living and working in New York City. His interdisciplinary practice merges sculpture and technology to create kinetic solar sculptures, video installations, and live performances that center physical objects as tools for collaborative processes. His works have been shown and produced in venues such as MoMA PS1, SFMoMA, PS122 Gallery, International Objects, The Center for the LessGood Idea, and Bates Dance Festival. He is a founding member of Artist Commit, an artist-run initiative invested in advocating for a climate-conscious, equitable, and resilient future. Deville is currently a visiting assistant professor at the Collaborative Arts Department at Tisch School of the Arts of New York University.
